Scent Work Program
Scent Work is a sport that enables dogs to utilize their remarkable sense of smell to find particular scents, similar to the roles of working detection dogs.
In this activity, dogs explore assigned areas with their handlers, who offer guidance only when needed. The program embraces the fun of sniffing is suitable for all dogs, no matter their breed or experience.
Scent Work Beginer:
Wednesdays
1:30pm - 2:30pm

Wednesdays

Equipment required for all Scent Work classes

Dog crate for crating your dog during class

One clean small glass jar with a metal lid, such as a baby food or small mustard jar
-
Every dog must have a properly fitted training collar and a 10 ft leash
-
Harnesses are preferred and we can help you pick out the right one for your dog

​Train your dog with high value, easily chewable treats.
Prerequisites for Scent Work Beginner class

EITHER successful completion of the Basic Obedience
-
OR successful completion of the Basic Obedience pass/fail evaluation administered by an IPOC trainer
-
The evaluation will be scheduled with a designated IPOC trainer, who may be contacted through the registrar

The evaluation fee will be the same as the Basic Obedience pass/fail test

The evaluation must be completed before a student may enroll in an IPOC Scent Work class

Scent Work Beginner
Dogs and handlers will be introduced to the sport of Scent Work.
Handlers will be introduced to methods to invoke their dog’s hunting skills using food and eventually the four AKC odors of birch, cypress, clove and anise. They will be introduced to both the skills of training and the rules of competition.

Prerequisites for Scent Work Advanced class

Pass the Scent Work Beginner class

The instructor's permission

The instructor will inform students of what other equipment will be necessary.

Scent Work Advanced
Training will include a continuation of detection tests with more advanced hides, multiple hides, blind hides, and distractions.
